Accessibility statement
Last updated: 25 October 2026
Curio Digital wants everyone to be able to use our website (curiodigital.co.uk) and enjoy our experiences (play.curiodigital.co.uk), whatever their age, ability or device. This statement explains how we design for accessibility, where we are, and how to tell us about problems.
Our aim
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard expected of UK public sector websites.
How we design for accessibility
- Pages use clear headings, landmarks and labels, so they work with screen readers.
- Everything can be used with a keyboard, with a clearly visible focus outline and a "skip to content" link.
- Text colours are chosen for strong contrast, and colour is never the only way information is shown.
- Animations are gentle, and they switch off if your device is set to reduce motion.
- Pages work when zoomed and on small screens.
- In our experiences, puzzle feedback ("not quite, try again") is announced to screen readers. There are no time limits. Every puzzle has hints and an option to reveal the answer, so no one gets stuck.
- Two difficulty levels, Explorer and Detective, let players choose the challenge that suits them.
How accessible this website and our experiences are
We tested this website and our experiences in October 2026 (see Testing below) and found no WCAG 2.2 AA failures that we haven't fixed. We have not yet tested them with screen readers, so we can't yet confirm full compliance. We're aware of the following:
- Illustrations are decorative and hidden from screen readers. The story and puzzles are given in text.
- Some puzzles are visual (for example spotting a pattern in a row of chimneys). Each option has a text label, but these puzzles may be harder without sight. Hints and the reveal option are always available.
Testing
On 25 October 2026 we tested every page of this website on phone and desktop screen sizes. We used the automated tools axe and Lighthouse, worked through each page with a keyboard only, and checked reduced motion, zooming to the equivalent of 400% and increased text spacing.
We found one problem: the keyboard focus outline did not stand out enough against light backgrounds. We fixed it the same day.
On the same day we tested our experiences the same way, playing through every chapter on both levels. We found and fixed these problems:
- The keyboard focus outline did not stand out enough on the story cards and on the lock puzzle.
- After a wrong answer, revealing an answer or switching level, keyboard focus jumped back to the top of the page.
- Screen readers did not announce the decoded message on the cipher wheel, or the new symbol on a lock dial.
- The treasures you collect were shown only as pictures, with no reliable text for screen readers.
We now run these checks on every new experience before it launches. Next, we plan to test with screen readers (VoiceOver and TalkBack). We'll update this statement with the results, including any problems and when we expect to fix them.
