How a project works
A free chat
Tell us about your place, your visitors and what you’d like them to discover.
A visit and an idea
We walk round with you, find the stories, and send you an outline and a fixed price.
Story and design
We write and illustrate it. You check the facts and approve the story.
Build and test
We build it and test it on real phones, with real visitors where we can.
Launch
Your QR signs go up, your staff get a one-page guide to answer visitors’ questions, and visitors start playing. We’re on hand to help.
Afterwards
Hosting, support and small changes are covered by the annual licence. The first year is included.
Questions venues ask
Do you work with councils and town centres?
Yes. A story trail can link shops, landmarks and green spaces, giving families a reason to explore a town centre, high street or country park. We can give you costs and a description for a funding bid.
How long does it take?
Most projects take a few weeks from the first visit to launch, depending on the size of the story and how quickly facts can be checked. We’ll agree dates with you at the start.
Who writes the story?
We do, with you. We find the stories in your place, write them, and send everything to you to check. Nothing goes live until you’ve approved the facts and the final version.
What do we need to do?
Walk round with us, share any stories, facts or photos you have, check the story when it’s ready, and put up the QR signs. There’s no hardware to install and nothing to maintain.
What if there’s no signal on site?
That’s fine. Special technology means visitors only need a signal for a few seconds at the start, not while they go round.
Is it accessible?
We design to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2 AA) and test every experience with automated checks, a keyboard and reduced motion. Two levels let younger children and adults play together, and narration can be added.
What about our visitors’ data?
We don’t collect or store any. There are no accounts and no tracking, and a player’s name and progress stay on their own phone.
Can we pay for it with a grant?
Often, yes. A Standard project, with its first year of hosting and support, fits well within a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, which starts at £10,000, with room for signs and a launch. We can give you costs and a description for your application. Some funders ask for digital work to be openly licensed, so tell us who you’re applying to and we’ll agree how that works before you apply.
Do visitors have to pay?
That’s up to you. Many venues include it with entry; some charge a small fee for a trail pack. If you charge, every penny is yours: we never take a cut. We can talk through what suits your visitors.
Have a place with a story to tell?
We would love to hear about your venue, your visitors and what you would like them to discover.
